A.      New Zealand: Not Just for Frodo Anymore by Katie DeGuzman (UT), Elizabeth Mills (UT), Amanda Lord (Education Abroad Network), and Rhiannon McKenzie-Smit (Lincoln University)

This session will introduce Education Abroad professionals to the growing but still little known destination of New Zealand. Best practices and program development will be discussed from the point of view of a US Study Abroad office, program provider, and a New Zealand institution.

B.      The Lows and Highs of a Strong J-1 Student Intern Program by Daren Caine (UCF) & Carmen Ternette (UCF)

This session will address the complex process of bring a J -1 Student Intern to a university. It considers the significant amount of paperwork required and the difficulty of explaining U.S. federal requirement to foreign institutions, department and prospective student interns. It will also address issues of compliance prior to and after arrival.

C.      Preparing International Students for their New Life: An Innovative Virtual Pre-Arrival Orientation Students by Alejandra Parra, M.A. (Nova Southeastern University)

Capitalizing on university resources, NSU has put together this innovative virtual object in the form of a pre-arrival orientation to make sure new international students get all the basic information they need when getting ready for their new life. Presentation will cover creation process, rationale, implementation phase, and students’ opinions.

 A.      Ethics is Not a Game: But Come Play Anyway! By David Ware (David Ware and Associates) & Mihaela Metianu (FAU)

Student & Scholar Advisors confront difficult ethical dilemmas every day. This session, using a fun and interactive card game will employ common advising examples to teach basic ethical principles, and tackle knotty problems.

B.      Development of Global Practicums to foster scholarship of engagement: Experiences from Ecuador and Suriname  by Elena Bastidas (Nova Southeastern University)

The session focuses on curriculum development in the area of conflict analysis and resolution (CAR) as it pertains to Global Practicums (GP)/Study abroad courses. The goal of the session is to analyze the implications of designing curriculum that embraces experiential learning and scholarship of engagement for CAR pedagogy of Global Practicums.

C.      EducationUSA: Resource Discussion for International Student Advisors by Dawn Harris Wooten (George Washington University)

Delivered from the viewpoint of an international student advisor, this session will highlight the tools and resources EdUSA offers via its website. Focus will be given to EdUSA free webinars, Weekly Updates, the HEI eNews, Regional Advising centers and the formation of an EdUSA Florida chapter. Materials from EdUSA Headquarters will be distributed at session.

 A.      The Big Bad Wolf: Is your House in Order for Government Visits? by David Ware (David Ware and Associates) & Debra Anderson (UF)

The Big Bad Wolf (i.e. the government) visits campuses for a number of different purposes. This session will explore the various types of government visits (H1B, DOL, ICE, FBI) and how you should pre are for each. Best practices with regard to FERPA, recordkeeping, chain of command, and other issues will be explored.

B.      I Thought You Were Supposed to Do That! Defining Responsibilities for Faculty-Led Study Abroad by Tessly A. Dieguez, M.S. (UF), Dean “Rocky” Rockwell (UF), Giselda Beaudin, M.A. (Rollins College) & Erica Moussa, M.A. (UM)

This session will explore ways of improving communication between faculty and study abroad professionals. Three Florida institutions will share their initiatives and how they have helped with faculty-led programs.  The goal is to begin a conversation about how this collaborative relationship is defined and discuss ideas for future implementation.

C.      Conditional Admission- Working with ESL & Admissions Offices by Sara Brake (UWF)

An overview of how conditional admission was established at UWF.  How the Intensive English Program works with Admissions for initial processing and student transitions from ESL to University coursework.
